Take Back Your Day - 3 Ways to Manage Time at Work

Work is something that people like to say is never done, but the truth of the matter is that work can get done if you know how to do it. Yes, I know everyone’s going to say, “You’ll never finish all your work,” but for the purposes of this article I’m going to assume that you can finish a good majority of your work if you are just a bit more productive in life. Being productive is all about the right formula, and everyone has the ability to do it. 

  1. The first thing is the 20 minute rule. So most people don’t understand that it takes roughly 20 minutes to get truly and honestly pulled into a task and become productive at it, but most people get bored and distracted in just a few minutes. Yes, it can get annoying if you don’t “feel” like doing things, but you can’t think like that. You have to be honest with yourself and try to give it some time. If after 20 minutes you are not buzzing along getting things done, then you should walk away for a few minutes. Understanding that you need time to get into the zone is going to help you to get things done, and be way more productive. A side idea with this is to understand that you shouldn’t be allowing anything (hint-hint- iPhone) break your concentration before you’re in the 20 minute zone. 

  2. The simple “NO.” Everyone becomes over stressed and over worked because they are constantly working towards their goals, but suddenly everyone else needs help with everything. I understand that sometimes we want to help our colleagues, but we can not believe that saying “NO” is in someway being rude to our coworkers. Instead we need to understand that our colleagues can get things done on their own, and if we continuously say yes to everything then nothing in the office is actually going to get done. 

  3. Don’t take Meetings. More than 60% of meetings are things that could have been articulated to you in 10 minutes or less. If you are in the position to get rid of meetings do it. I recommend setting up phone conversations if you must because these can be ended at any moment, but you can’t just kick someone out suddenly if you realize an hour has passed. Try to not take meetings if you can and watch as suddenly hours open up in your daily schedule. 

Overall being productive is a balance of working hard at your goals and at the same time getting things done in a productive way. To do this you need to think of yourself first, say no to people, try to limit your meetings, and above all else give yourself time to get into the zone!
